The co-Museum Conference 2018
The 13th CoMuseum International Conference, titled Museums and Justice, focused on justice and representation, emphasizing fairness within and through museums and cultural organizations. Discussions revolved around the extent to which DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, Accessibility) principles were being considered or applied internally in cultural organizations concerning employment, governance, and programming. Additionally, the conference explored how this process, or lack thereof, influenced cultural action globally.
Exploring the theme of justice and representation, participants critically examined the internal practices of cultural organizations. The focus extended to areas such as employment, governance, and programming, evaluating the extent to which DEIA principles were being integrated into these facets. The discussions aimed to shed light on the strides made and the challenges faced in creating environments that truly reflect the diversity of voices, perspectives, and experiences.
Recognizing the significance of DEIA principles, the Conference emphasized the need for cultural organizations to not only adopt inclusive policies but also to actively implement them. This involved assessing the impact of these principles on cultural actions globally, exploring how the choices made internally reverberate in the broader cultural landscape.
The Conference was organized by the Benaki Museum, the U.S. Embassy in Greece, and the British Council, in collaboration with the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Greece, the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, and KOLLEKTIVA for Social Innovation and Culture. The event took place under the auspices of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture, the Municipality of Athens, the Municipality of Thessaloniki, and ICOM Greece.
