THE ISLAND Bristol
Going from strength to strength, The Island started back in 2007 as a short term project based at the old bridewell police station.
8 years later we are in the great position to be negotiating a longer term lease and to be hosting some exciting new work from artists from all around Bristol and beyond.
The Island as a project is proving the importance of positioning all artists in the heart of the creative community of a city and allows them to become contributors to re-design resilient cities and spaces.
To celebrate the hard work and the love that has gone to this project we'd like to present our documentary on The Island project.
Transforming Future Museums: International Museum Academy British Council, Greece
The programme will offer organisations and individuals alike the support and tools to test out new ways of working, become more central to their communities, keep up to date with current international trends and opportunities, and adopt a more collaborative, innovative, entrepreneurial and outward-looking approach in order to bring positive change to society. It will also equip museum professionals with the skills and knowledge needed to become competitive in an international environment.
The programme is supported by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation.
THE ISLAND Open Studios 2016
The Island, a police station-turned-multi use art facility in central Bristol opens its doors to the public to view the many studios and unique space inside.
The Island’s annual open studios are a highlight of our arts and events calendar and we look forward to inviting you all along to join us in September.
Our open studios are a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to explore the building, meet our artists tenants, discuss their ideas at our artists surgeries and get to know more about The Island and how they can be involved.
They are also an opportunity to celebrate all things around art, music, events at The Island featuring a group art show, films, music, workshops and 1-2-1 arts consultations with our team.

At various venues in Bristol
“Working in a Grade II listed building has its charms and unique features, as well as its challenges. But we feel very lucky to have this wonderful, unique space – both a base for our many resident artists, and as a fascinating venue for site-specific work.”
This is Dina Ntziora, Project Manager at The Island – the studio complex, arts facility and events space based at Broadmead’s Old Bridewell Police Station – enthusing about her uniquely atmospheric workplace.
The Island is part of Artspace Lifespace, a community interest company that recycles vacant, underused and problem properties into thriving creative resources. A vibrant hub for all things alternative, The Island now hosts 162 resident artists, plus a circus school, music studios, dance rooms, fashion studio and a beautiful top-floor gallery space.
Vision for the future of Jacob's Wells Baths
Every road led to Jacob’s Wells Baths on a recent Saturday afternoon for a family fun day headlined by musician-turned-children’s entertainer Kid Carpet. The huge building was full of colour and happy faces: a vision of how things could be if some serious ambition was matched by some serious money.
The transformation of a former bank into what is now The Old Market Assembly, complete with theatre, bakery, bar and restaurant shows what can happen with large empty buildings. Imagine a similar transformation here but on a scale much, much larger.
Focusing on establishing financial sustainability for community sites, Artspace Lifespace transform desolate buildings into useful spaces. “We make space accessible to a wide variety of creative influences, to enrich and develop the multi-cultural identity of any community,” says project manager Dina Ntziora. “We support place-based, creative problem solving that encourages the emergence of new spaces for participation, diversity, and experimentation in the community.”
Save SPACE: a community led petition to save SPACE
A community arts venue in Old Market has been saved after an online petition was launched.
Artspace Lifespace – the community interest company behind The Island, based in the Old Bridewell Police Station – have been running a series of public and community arts activities and events at Arts West Side, under the title ‘SPACE’.
Standing for ‘sound, performance, art, community, engagement’, the events series has included public events, art shows, artist residencies and community meetings.
BBC Feature: The creative boom in empty spaces
For most people, empty shops and offices are an eyesore and unwelcome evidence of an economic downturn. But for artists, desperate for a cheap place to work and exhibit, they are a godsend.
Across the UK, more and more grassroots artists, designers and performers are taking advantage of empty buildings by moving in, with low or no rent, while landlords wait for new commercial tenants or wait for developments to begin.
The likes of Damien Hirst and Sarah Lucas started their careers by staging shows in such spaces in the late 1980s. Now Dan Thompson, who runs the Empty Shops Network, says the activity has "really taken off" in the past couple of years.

Resident Advisor Review for a club night at The Island event space
As a producer, Omar McCutcheon, AKA Batu, has risen rapidly from relative obscurity to become a highly regarded figure in UK club music. As well as putting out EPs on Dnuos Ytivil and Beneath's Mistry, he runs the Timedance label and party series. The final Timedance event of the year went down on Saturday at The Island, Bristol's intimate and forbidding underground prison cell complex. UntilMyHeartStops cofounder Leif had the run of the decks for three hours, before local heroes Pev and Kowton performed the UK debut of their live show.

Sanctum by Theaster Gates, produced by Situations
Sanctum brings together all the aspects of working in the arts I strongly believe in; community, performance, creative use of empty spaces, history, architecture, time and above all people. The entire project is made of Bristol. It brings back to my mind the words of Theaster at his St George’s performance; ‘this is not my project it is Bristol people’s project. People are powerful and when we create platforms they can create powerful things. Sanctum is about Bristol’s capacity to be amazing’.
People are naturally interested in empty spaces and changing a space from private to public creates a feeling of ownership. Allowing them to come back as many times as they wish and experience the space in such different ways, has allowed Sanctum to become part of our daily routines and point of reference in our social circles like no other public art piece, performance or exhibition had. We went to Sanctum, and Sanctum came back home with us.
