Girl Power Academy Greece
In collaboration with the Danish organization Girl Power, we launched in Greece the educational program Girl Power Academy Greece. Girl Power Academy was an academy for empowering new coaching leaders, giving them tools and methodology to explore and familiarize themselves with theories and methodological practices on issues of leadership, communication, personal development, inclusive coaching behavior, etc.
The initiative was addressed to young women aged 18-30 of all nationalities who came from vulnerable groups (low income, victims of abuse, single parent families, immigrants, refugees) and wanted to pursue a coaching career, but mainly to connect themselves with a larger network of women who wanted to change the world. The goal of Girl Power Academy Greece was to give empowerment opportunities to young women and to reverse the embedded perception that football was not equal for both genders.
The program was divided into three stages. The first stage was the “Girl Power Coaching Seminar”, which included a 3-day seminar aimed at providing coaching experience following the methodology of Girl Power. In the second stage, participants attended an intensive empowerment program by emphasizing leadership skills and networking. Women and girls at the end of the program were able to create their own grassroots women’s football team. The final stage of the program was the “Girl Power Mentorship Program” where participants were offered a Girl Power Mentor to help and support them to transfer the know-how to their own community.
What is Girl Power?
Girl Power Organization was founded in 2014 by Khaleda Popal, former Captain of the Afghanistan Women National Football Team. It focuses on women minorities giving them the opportunity to expand their social circle and develop better self-esteem and confidence through sports. The aim of the association is to use sports as a tool to mobilize and empower minorities such as immigrants, refugees, and members of the LGBT community in Europe. The organization seeks to develop the understanding of different cultures and races so as to promote religious and racial tolerance in European societies. Girl Power finds volunteer trainers to work with the communities and seeks to connect them with local Danish citizens.
