DIY or Die
Simple Things is the multi-venue music festival that sprawls through the streets of Bristol in the city’s most loved venues. It is a multi-venue festival of music, discussion using a mixture of established gig spaces and DIY venues to present a breadth of musical diversity in a truly unique configuration.
At the 2016 addition to the programme Simple Things organised a series of discussions, installations and one-off performances supported by Arts Council England in the week preceding the main festival, exploring key issues and experiences within the contemporary musical landscape.
I was invited to join the panel DIY or die: Is Bristol's changing landscape providing opportunities or challenges for its creative scene? together with some good friends Bristol's nightlife independent economy.
With DIY ideals held in such high esteem, we looked at what fuels the appeal of these thriving grassroots operations in the city, as well as the tenacity of its residents who are working against the backdrop of a rapidly changing landscape.
Panellists:
Dan Davies (Young Echo)
Dina Ntziora (The Island)
Joe Hatt (Howling Owl Records)
